CENTENARY OPEN 4TH AUGUST (CSS 71 VISITOR CSS 73)

With the continuing fine weather, the course was in excellent condition for this annual event and entries were received from both local clubs and across the Midlands. Although the fairways were playing shorter, it was still necessary to hit the receptive greens and apart from the three best scores, results were generally in line with normal summer competitions.
In-form Evesham member Stu Berry, a South African with established cricketing credentials and a competitive edge reminiscent of Tony Fawcett, shot a remarkable gross 78 off 16 and found his handicap reduced from 16 to 12 by the end of the day. Relatively close was Kevin Phillips with a net 66 and in third place Rhys Wallace from Handsworth, scoring a gross 73 - 5 = 68. Good to see ex-member Gary Bristow from Redditch returning with a gross 73, but even he was pipped by Stuart Bennett with an even-par 72. Both players will be pleased with their handicap reductions since the visitors CSS was 73.
Skipper Tyrrell made it back from his jaunt in Bordeaux in time for the presentation and with the organisation overseen by Brian Marshall and pro Rob Steele, this was another fine advertisement for the attraction of the Fladbury links. Once again the presentation of the course and the service from the in-house catering enhanced the event, so congratulations to Jim and the greenstaff lads and Bev and her team.
