  • Welcome to the Seniors Section of Evesham Golf Club, in which we have a varied programme of golf through out the year. There are roll ups on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Friday mornings taking place at 8.15.

The main Seniors day is Wednesday, when most, but not all competitions are held. During the winter months a Winter League and Eclectic competition is run fortnightly, with a throw up fiddle in between.

During the main golfing season there many competitions to get involved with, several Trophy, Stableford and Medal competitions, Open and mixed events, away days, and 20 interclub matches.

The section is open to all male members who are aged 55 and over. We have about 75 playing members, with age’s from 55 to 80 plus, with handicaps generally falling between 13 and 24. We are a friendly section, as indeed the whole club is, and we welcome anyone who wishes to play with us. While we believe that Senior’s golf should be a social game, and should be fun, we still believe in being competitive and adhering strictly to the rules of golf. A committee is elected each year at the seniors A.G.M to administer the section.

  • Seniors Captains Charity for 2017

bigpicThe Evesham Seniors Christmas lunch was the ideal occasion for outgoing Seniors Section Captain Ian Wood to present a cheque for £2000 to Martin Blackaller from Ian’s Captain’s Charity, Acorns. The money was raised by the Seniors Section throughout the past year on behalf of the Captain’s Charity.

In thanking the Seniors for their generous donation Martin explained how the money would be used to support children with life limiting conditions together with their families and carers. Martin also explained how the charity was heavily reliant on donations needing to raise some £7M to fund their £10M budget. The remainder of the money comes from Government grants.

  • bigpicEach year Evesham Golf club Seniors' Section has a full programme of events, competitions and matches, including eighteen trophy competitions. The trophies are traditionally presented following a Christmas lunch in December, one of the highlights of the year for the senior golfers.

  • Seniors Section Golfer of the Year

bigpicEvesham Golf Club Seniors Section Golfer of the Year is a trophy presented to the player who accumulates most points awarded during the year for entering events and competitions, with extra points awarded for doing well.

The trophy itself is a lovely silver bowl presented to the Section by Steve Deakin, and therefore known as the Deakin Trophy.

The winner this year is Ian Wood who was also the Section captain during the year.

  • Seniors AGM Competition

bigpicEvesham Golf Club Senior’s section held their Annual General Meeting at the clubhouse on Wednesday 11th October.

Prior to the meeting 24 seniors took to the course for a 9 hole stableford competition. Outgoing captain Ian Wood sealed his year as captain by winning the competition by 1 shot. Before the meeting took place the prize-giving for the Ralph Burton knockout competition and the Spencer plate competition took place. The winner of the Ralph Burton trophy was Ian Wood and the runner up was Ian Facer. Winner of the Spencer plate was Alan Askew and the runner up was Dave Kewley.

At the AGM outgoing captain Ian Wood thanked the section their help and support and particularly thanked members of the committee for all their hard work in making the seniors events and competitions a great success. The charity fund raising effort by the section means that Acorns, Ian’s chosen charity, will receive a cheque for £2000. He then handed over the reins to new captain Bill Dobie and wished him well for the coming year.

  • Seniors Championship

This year’s seniors championship was played over two days on the 9th and 11th August. Unfortunately the weather intervened and forced the Wednesday round to be abandoned due to a waterlogged course. The competition was reduced to a single round on the Friday. Fortunately the weather smiled on us that day and we enjoyed the excellent condition of the course.

A total of 20 players took part and some good scores were achieved. In the end Mike Abraham ran out winner of both the Diffin cup and the Wilson jug. His score of gross 86 and nett 70 was sufficient to win the competition. In second place with a gross 88 and nett 72 was Geoff Wellens. • Ray Till Tankards

bigpic26 Evesham golf club seniors took part in the annual Ray Till tankards competition on Wednesday 12th April. The format for this competition is greensomes bogey whereby pairs of golfers have to score nett par for a half and better than nett par for a win. This is a difficult format as teams are playing against the course as well as the rest of the field and is made more difficult as the competition was played off the white tees.

Winners were Mike Brumage and Les Bond with a score of plus 1
Second on countback were Bryan Rogers and John Smith on level
Third were Dave Kewley and Peter Ratledge also on level

  • Winter League 2016/2017

bigpicThis year’s winter League has now been completed. All ten rounds were played on the red course and we enjoyed some fine winter weather on the days that the rounds were played. The format was a stapleford competition with the best five scores to count. The lead was hotly contested from the outset with some magnificent scores being recorded. The winner was Martin Williams with a best five score of 197. In second place with a score of 195 was Geoff Wellens and in third place with a score of 192 was Mick Hocking.

There was also an eclectic competition with the best score on each hole over the ten rounds being recorded. The winner was Les Bond with an eclectic score of 58. In second place was Mick hocking with a score of 57 and Martin Williams was Third with a score of 54.

  • Seniors 3 Club Challenge

bigpicAn overcast but dry morning on the 1st March saw the Evesham Seniors play their 3 club challenge competition, the 3 clubs to include a putter. This format gives golfers the opportunity to improvise shots with the clubs available and to perhaps occasionally reflect on why they carry around the other eleven clubs, especially as over 50% of the field scored 30 points or better.

Mick Hocking was the winner scoring 38 points with last year’s winner Ian Wood coming second with 35 points. Third place went to Geoff Wellens on count back from Neil Croft and Bill Dobie just missing out all on 34 points.

Captain Ian Wood presented the trophy to Mick Hocking with Neil Croft and Geoff Wellens

  • Seniors Winter League

The winter league is well under way with 5 rounds played so far. We have been lucky with the weather to date and have been able to play all the rounds so far on the red course.

Setting the pace are Bill Dobie and Malcolm Boscott with total points scores of 164 closely followed by Bryan Rogers on 161 and Ian Facer on 159. However, that could all change in the remaining 5 rounds as the result depends on the best 5 rounds so there is plenty of time for the following pack to catch up.

In the eclectic competition Bryan Rogers is in the lead with a score of 52. Ian Facer and Geoff Wellens are chasing him with scores of 50. Bill Dobie, Les Bond and Malcolm Boscott are all on 49. Only 6 points separate the top 13 in this competition so there is plenty to play for next year.

  • Seniors Christmas Lunch

bigpicThe Christmas competition was a greensomes competition won by Malcolm Boscott and Brian Chapman. The lunch that followed was enjoyed by 35 seniors who were joined by Dan and Ryan.

The Evesham Seniors Christmas lunch was the ideal occasion for outgoing Seniors Section Captain Martin Williams to present a cheque for £1502 to Sue Smith, Chair of the Worcester & District Branch of Parkinson’s UK, the money having been raised by the Seniors Section throughout the past year on behalf of their Seniors Captain’s Charity.

In thanking the Seniors for their generous donation Sue explained how the money would be used to support people affected by Parkinson’s together with their families and carers. Sue also explained some of the recent initiatives being launched as part of providing this support include exercise classes and singing for fun sessions.”

  • Autumn Cup

bigpicIn contrast to the dank conditions for the recent foursomes event it was gloriously warm and sunny day for the Evesham Seniors Autumn Cup, a medal format off white tees, and their final trophy completion of the season. With the course playing beautifully everything was set for a day of low scoring and so it turned out with victory going to Alan Askew with a splendid five under par 67 earning Alan the trophy and a one shot handicap reduction. Second place went to Geoff Wellens (70) with Steve Deakin (71) taking third spot.

  • Mike Morris Foursomes

bigpicA wet drizzly morning harbouring the arrival of autumn greeted the Evesham seniors as they gathered for the Mike Morris Foursomes. The infrequently played foursomes format coupled with the less than favourable conditions made scoring difficult for number of the pairings but not for the eventual winners Malcolm Boscott and Steve Metcalf who took victory with splendid 40 points.

  • Wychavon Challenge Cup

The Wychavon Challenge Cup was the latest trophy to be contested by the Evesham Seniors played as a Pairs better ball medal off the white tees with a 90% handicap allowance. • Seniors Captain's Charity Day

bigpicAn elimination Texas Scramble was the format for the Evesham Seniors as they gathered for the Seniors Captain's Charity Day at the Craycombe course. Playing fourballs off 10% of combined handicap the competition was keenly contested with the team of Ian Tait, Ian Facer, Ian Wood & Jeff Fletcher, who by popular demand was made an honorary Ian for the day, coming out on top with a score of 62.4. Second place went to Bill Dobie, Malcolm Hiscock, Mike Brumage & Ray Smart (63.2) with Dave Kewley, Jerry Cain, Roy Weston & Steve Deakin (64.1) taking third spot. • Jubilee Cup

bigpicThe Jubilee Cup, a medal format off the white tees, was the latest trophy competition for the Evesham Seniors. With the Craycombe course in superb condition and the weather hot and sunny a good field had assembled and despite the scoring being higher than might have been expected there was little dividing the leading contenders. The Jubilee Cup winner was Malcolm Hiscock, with a one over par 73, on count back from Alistair Millward with third place going to Roy Weston (74).

Earlier in the week the Seniors had played a stableford qualifying completion that was won by Alistair Millward with a splendid 44 points earning Alistair a 3 shot handicap reduction. Second place went to Ian Facer (41 pts) with Steve Deakin (37 pts) taking third place.”

  • Seniors Championship

bigpicThirty six holes of medal format golf off the white tees spread over two days was the challenge that faced the Evesham Golf Club Seniors when they contested this year's Seniors Championship. Fortunes predictably fluctuated over the two days with in some cases promising first round scores being undone by a poor second round and vice versa but in the end it was consistent play and scoring over the two rounds that was the key to success.

The Bob Diffin trophy for the best gross score was won by John Richards with rounds of 84 & 80 (164) on count back from Alan Askew 82 & 82 (164) with Malcolm Boscott in third place with 85 & 81 (166).

In the best nett score competition, played for the Wilson Jug, rounds of 73 & 67 (140) saw Tony Fawcett lift the trophy on count back from Alan Askew 70 & 70 (140) with John Richards third with 73 & 69 (142).

  • Seniors Invitation Day

bigpicIt was that time of year to meet up with old golfing friends as the Evesham Seniors held their annual Invitation Day, played as a better ball pairs stableford.

With the weather good, save for an occasional shower, and the course in excellent condition everything was set up for a good scoring day and so it proved.

The lead changed hands several times with the eventual winners being Mike Brumage and John Best with a superb 47 points. Bill Kite & John Williams took second (45 pts) with Mike Abraham & Ball Johal third (44 pts) and Martin Williams & Ray Thompson fourth (43 pts).

The best back 9 prize went on count back to Mike Whiteford & Gary Bristow (21 pts) and nearest the pin was won by Mike Brumage (best home player) and Keith Williams (best guest).

  • bigpicNot one to miss out on an occasion Geoff Insall "happened" to be on hand to congratulate the winners claiming it was 3 brummies together.......

  • Costa Craycombe

bigpicA morning more suited to early winter that summer awaited the Evesham Seniors as they competed in a white tee medal competition for the Costa Craycombe trophy. With heavy squally rain making for difficult early playing conditions and the medal format meaning every shot counted, returning to the club house with a competitive score was always going to be challenging.

The eventual winner was Malcolm Boscott with a excellent level par 72 which won him the trophy and a one shot handicap reduction. Three players were tied on 75 with on count back second place going to Martin Williams with Ian Tait third and Dave Kewley fourth, Dave also having his handicap cut by one.

  • Seniors Captains Day

bigpicThis year's Seniors Captains Day took the form of the now traditional ‘Ryder Cup’ played over 6 holes of greensomes, 6 holes of fourball better ball and 6 holes of singles between teams representing Europe, led by the Seniors Captain, and the USA, led by the Seniors Vice Captain. After a keenly fought contest in which Europe won the fourball and singles with the USA taking the greensomes, the match was won by Europe by 76 and a half points to 67 and a half.
